PEARLS (Program to Encourage Active Rewarding Lives for Seniors) is a treatment program designed to reduce symptoms of depression, anxiety, sadness, and loneliness and improve quality of life for people over the age of 60. It operates in 35 states and the District of Columbia, with over 211 organizations implementing the program across the United States.
The program consists of six to eight in-home visits by a PEARLS coach over a six month period. Together we focus on the following goals:
Finding practical solutions to everyday challenges
Reconnecting through social and physical activities
Making time for things that bring joy and fulfillment
The program is part of a cultural shift in how depression is managed by and for aging community members. Most programs address depression and anxiety in older adults using a clinical mental health toolkit (counseling and/or medication), while PEARLS focuses on skill building.
